The US president was also described as 'senile' and 'corrupt'

A poll of US voters has revealed that they think Joe Biden is "incompetent" and "old" and if there was an election held tomorrow Biden would narrowly hold on to the White House.

Biden was also described as "senile" and "corrupt" - and viewed as too old to be president by 71 per cent of voters.

The results suggested Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, has a lot of work to do if he is to answer the call of those in his party who want a younger challenger to Biden.

Words such as "unknown" and "unsure" were associated with him.

The poll, carried out by the Daily Mail, also found that former president Donald Trump is a "criminal," "dangerous," and "disgusting."

James Johnson, co-founder of JL Partners, said the one-word survey offers an indication of how leaders are viewed across the country.

"The key group to the next election – independent voters – are unsatisfied with any of the current choices available," he said.

"To them, Trump is 'disgusting', a 'criminal' and an 'asshole,' while Biden is 'old,' 'senile' and 'incompetent'.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"DeSantis gets some credit for his leadership of Florida, while Christie and Newsom are too unknown to register.

"What is clear is that – for both Independents and the American people – the idea of a 2020 rematch next year elicits little enthusiasm."

According to the poll, Biden would beat Ron DeSantis by one point (44 per cent of the vote to 43), Trump by two points and Mike Pence by three points.

The poll was conducted from June 12 to 15 with 1,000 likely general election voters across the US.

Meghan Milloy, founder of Republican Women for Progress, said: "The Republican Party likes to think we have grown so much since 2016, but, the truth is, we've gotten worse.

"We now think Trump is the norm and anyone marginally less horrific is Mother Theresa.

"Until we are able to fully reset our decency barometers to account for the rule of law, dedication to democracy, and actual winnability, we will continue to have to deal with a slate of ding dongs that are going to do nothing but bolster a Biden White House."
