Donald Trump has declared that the UK's Chagos deal is 'an act of great stupidity'

Donald Trump's White House staff are "rolling their eyes" and "shaking their head" at Sir Keir Starmer as conversations between the two nations are becoming "increasingly difficult", it has been claimed.

Speaking to GB News, host of Late Show Live Bev Turner lifted the lid on the US President's "increasing frustration" with the Prime Minister, as tensions escalate over Greenland and the Chagos Islands.

Posting on Truth Social, the President declared that the UK's "surrender deal" of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is an "act of great stupidity".

Speaking to GB News, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones made clear that there will be "no changes" to the agreement.

Detailing the mood within Donald Trump's administration, Bev told GB News: "That relationship between the UK and the US has been fascinating to those of us who understand a little bit about how President Trump's mind works, but also watch what is happening in the UK. How could these two global leaders have anything in common when they are so politically separate?

"We saw Trump have the State Visit, he came over to the UK twice last year, and on both occasions they played very nicely together, they had a lot in common. And President Trump has repeatedly said, 'I like your country, I like your Prime Minister'.

"It's now looking that although he may still like the UK, he's clearly getting increasingly frustrated with Keir Starmer."

Having spoken to White House insiders amid the growing tensions, Bev revealed: "In fact, I was talking to a White House insider at the end of last week, who rolled their eyes at me and shook their head and said, 'we are finding these conversations very, very difficult'.

"They also insinuated that they're spending a lot of time on the phone at the moment to No10 in relation to these huge international issues which are affecting both countries."

Offering her verdict on Mr Trump's Truth Social statement on Chagos, Bev said: "I was shocked when I saw that statement on Truth Social from Donald Trump today. To actually use the word 'stupidity' and the word 'weakness', it will no doubt will have touched a nerve with Keir Starmer.

"Because weak is what he does not like to be seen as. And of course, Trump positions himself as being the polar opposite of weak. They talk about peace through strength, strength and muscularity, and on the global stage it is how President Trump defines himself."

Discussing the newly ignited US stance on the Chagos deal, Bev said: "There have been very strong lobbying voices here in DC, talking to people in the White House about Chagos. That messaging has clearly got through to President Trump via various means.

"A lot of people have been in contact with the White House about this, and it has very much come across his desk today. However, those lobbyists, a lot of them based in the UK or at least British, are saying this is not yet time for celebration.

"They feel that President Trump's statement certainly strengthens their case, that they believe that the UK should still retain sovereignty leadership over the Chagos Islands, and we should not be handing that sovereignty to Mauritius. But this is not a done deal."

Questioning Keir Starmer's next steps, Bev admitted: "What will Starmer do now? Will he capitulate to Donald Trump's demands to keep the status quo as it is? I very much personally doubt it."

Looking ahead to Karoline Leavitt's press briefing at the White House, Bev told GB News that she aims to ask her about Mr Trump's stance on the UK's newly approved Chinese mega-embassy.

Bev said: "Karoline Leavitt will be holding one of those now legendary press briefings in the White House, and I will be there for GB News. Last week, it was the busiest briefing room that I have ever seen. It was so packed they had to keep the doors open. So the chances of me getting a question today on behalf of GB News and the British people is fairly slim, but I will be there.

"The question I would want to ask the White House, separate to Chagos, I would really like to know how they feel about the Chinese embassy story, and the fact that we have now given that planning permission to the Chinese embassy to build this mega embassy in our financial district, with 208 rooms underneath the ground of London.

"And I would love to ask Karoline Leavitt today whether the President of the United States would ever allow such a building to take place in this city, because I think we know the answer is a very stark no."

She concluded: "It draws a distinction between the leadership and the ideology of these two countries, quite clearly, that the UK is much more relaxed about allowing China to operate in our country, much more relaxed than the President would ever be."
