The billionaire and US President had a dramatic fallout overnight

Donald Trump has been urged to nationalise Elon Musk's SpaceX after the pair had a huge fallout last night.

The pair had been lobbing verbal insults at each other on their respective social media platforms, Trump's Truth Social and Musk's X.

Things culminated when former Trump advisor Steve Bannon called on the President to seize control of SpaceX as well as demanding the Republican to deport Musk.

In response, Musk threatened he would start "decommissioning" his company's Dragon spacecraft in response, something which is is vital for ferrying Nasa astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Tensions had been simmering throughout the week, when Musk denounced Trump's sweeping tax-cut and spending bill, calling it a "disgusting abomination."

Musk had ramped up attempts to kill the bill, saying it would add too much to the nation's $36.2 trillion in debt.

Trump broke his silence late on Thursday, telling reporters he was "very disappointed" in Musk, adding: "Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore."

Almost simultaneously, Musk responded in real time on X saying: "Without me, Trump would have lost the election."

He also suggested that Trump's signature tariffs would push the US into a national recession later this year. Things came to a head when Musk accused Trump of appearing in files relating to the disgraced paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

In a statement, the White House called the breakup an "unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted."

The public spat sent Tesla's stock price plummeting 14 per cent and drove uncertainty among Trump's allies in Congress - who are working to pass the monumental spending package that Democrats and a small number of vocal Republicans oppose.

According to White House insiders, the fallout was ignited after Trump's decision to pull his nomination of Jared Isaacman, Musk's hand-picked candidate to be Nasa administrator.

"He was not happy," about Isaacman, one of the White House officials said of Musk.

Isaacman, a billionaire entrepreneur and close Musk ally, was seen as key to advancing Musk's vision for space exploration and commercial space ventures.

After his nomination was rejected, Isaacman posted on X: "I am incredibly grateful to President Trump, the Senate and all those who supported me."

The move was viewed within the administration as a direct snub to Musk, the two officials said, signalling a loss of political clout and deepening the rift between him and Trump's team.
