The controversial billionaire is stepping back from his role in the Trump administration

Elon Musk has prompted concern after he attended a press conference in The White House with what appeared to be a black eye.

At the conference, Musk and President Donald Trump confirmed the billionaire's departure from a frontline role in the White House.

Musk said the plan does not mark the end of Doge and that much of his cost-cutting team will remain in place and he will continue to give advice to President Trump.

One user on Musk's own X platform asked: "Why is Elon Musk’s right eye, black and blue??????" while another added: "Does anyone know why Elon has a black eye."

Musk later confirmed his child was the one who gave him the black eye, saying he was "horsing around" with his child, who then "punched me in the face."

Asked about the injury on his right eye, Musk said he told his son X: "Go ahead, punch me in the face. And he did."

Trump was quick to praise the billionaire in the press conference, saying: "Elon has worked tirelessly helping lead the most sweeping and consequential government reform program in generations.

He said: "Elon is really not leaving...He's going to be back and forth."

Meanwhile, a former Doge staffer said in an interview after leaving the team that the department would "fizzle out."

Sahil Lavingia spent almost two months working for the group, told reporters "It'll just die a whimper" after Musk leaves.

He said: "So much of the appeal and allure was Elon" adding that he expected Doge staffers to "just stop showing up to work. It's like kids joining a startup that will go out of business in four months."

Elsewhere, Trump said he will speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping and agreed to work out their differences on trade and tariffs.

It comes just hours after Trump accused Beijing of violating an agreement with Washington.

Trump said: "I'm sure that I'll speak to President Xi, and hopefully we'll work that out."
