Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said that a "woke culture has infiltrated" the armed forces

MP Esther McVey has claimed that the Conservative party will "root out" the "woke nonsense" in the army.

This comes after Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said that a "woke culture has infiltrated" the armed forces.

Last week, Shapps instructed the Ministry of Defence to review its guidelines to ensure that Britain can defend its borders and isn’t hindered by “political correctness”.

The move follows reports that the army wants to relax security checks for recruits in a bid to boost diversity and inclusion in the armed forces.

Esther McVey said that they will be doing a "long-term review"

Speaking on GB News McVey, who is the Tory MP for Tatton, said: "We want the best person for the job, not somebody who fits a quota for the job.

"Actually the Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps, has been right on the case saying no, he'll do a long-term review on what's going on.

"But immediately we've got to stop this craziness. We want the best people for a job and not some fixed quota. I think that is what is essential."

Host Patrick Christys asked her: "How was this allowed to happen under a Conservative government in the first place?"

She responded: "Well, it has expanded over time, you're right.

"And I think we have got to say, I know Labour brought the Equality Act back in back in 2010, but look how it spread.

"Look, I'm in there to look at equality, diversity, inclusion, quotas.

"And actually, if they're not working and people aren't doing the job at hand and we haven't got the right person doing the job, then we've got to get rid of all of that.

She said that Rishi Sunak wants to get the economy on track

"What I will say, is Rishi is very strong on this and what he wants to do is get the economy on track.

"He wants to get immigration down and make the country great again.

"And also what I will say is Mr. Flip Flop, that's Keir Starmer, did his latest flip flop tonight in Rochdale by standing by his candidate."

The Labour Party landed themselves in hot water after they stood by the candidate in the Rochdale by-election, despite his remarks about Israel.
