The EU continues to push for a looser migration arrangement with Britain

Sadiq Khan has thrown his weight behind a Youth Mobility Scheme between the UK and EU, leaving Brexiteers concerned about a major migration betrayal.

In a six-point social media thread, the Mayor of London dubbed the consequences of Brexit "heartbreaking", referring to the rights to live, work and travel freely across the EU.

The Mayor said: "At the same time, we’ll continue to invest in skills and training schemes to give Londoners and Brits the tools they need to pursue better paying jobs."

He added: "A UK-EU youth mobility scheme would only help this effort and make it easier for the Govt to fulfil its ambitions. It’s why I’ve long been urging the PM and British negotiators to pull out all the stops to get it over the line. This is a make-or-break moment in European history."

Khan stated that he would use this policy to "fill critical gaps in our labour market and fuel growth" by opening the doors to the migration of young European citizens in the new youth mobility scheme, despite the UK cutting ties with the continent politically over five years ago.

The London Mayor claimed tFshat the scheme would boost growth in London, Britain and Europe.

However, Brexiteers have warned that the EU's proposal could open the door to hundreds of thousands of migrants entering the UK every year.

Despite the UK already having quota-bound arrangements with 13 other countries - including Australia and New Zealand - an uncapped Youth Mobility scheme could result in millions of EU nationals being eligible to enter the UK.

GB News revealed that three-in-five EU nationals who registered to enter the workforce between 2012 and 2024 were under 30-years-old.

Data shared with the People's Channel showed a peak of 65 per cent in 2012/13, with a Covid-era slump down to 48 per cent in 2020/21.

However, a post-lockdown bounce to 63 per cent in 2023/24 ultimately restored the proportion of EU arrivals who sit within the Youth Mobility age range to the UK’s pre-Brexit figures.

The data also echoes statistics compiled by the Migration Observatory, showing 1,363,000 (65 per cent) of all EU-born adults who arrived in Britain between 2004 and 2016 were aged 18 to 30.

Responding to concerns about an uncapped arrangement between the UK and EU, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp told GB News: “This looks like it could become Free Movement by the back door.

“And, worse, some European countries give citizenship to illegal immigrants just three years after they are granted asylum, and they would then be eligible to flood into the UK. This could become a serious loophole in the UK’s immigration system.”

He added: “Keir Starmer is the world’s worst negotiator, as the Chagos fiasco shows. The Government were, until recently, saying that there would be no Youth Mobility scheme at all - we can’t trust a word they say on this, or indeed anything else.”

Reform UK MP Lee Anderson also said: “There’s no doubt — letting in hundreds of thousands more EU migrants, or any others, would directly defy the wishes of the British people. It was a close vote, but we chose Brexit — and won — despite the Tories’ failure to deliver.Meanwhile, Khan hailed the "golden" EU plot as a "landmark moment" for this Government.

The Mayor also hinted at the UK aligning itself closely with the EU in the future, urging the Government to come to an agreement with Brussels over the moment of youth into the UK and mainland Europe.

Brussels bureaucrats have demanded that those aged 18 to 30 should not need a purpose to enter the UK or adhere to a strict quota.

Sir Keir Starmer and his Government are set to host the first UK-EU summit to "reset relations" with the EU on Monday, with matters of fishing and dynamic alignment also being negotiated by the Prime Minister.

Despite setting out the UK’s position, there are growing concerns about the Prime Minister buckling to Brussels - with Starmer already being slammed for concessions handed to India, the United States and Mauritius.
