'I passionately disagree with Owen Jones - but you don't win arguments by cancelling voices,' Michael Gove said

Hard-left activist Owen Jones was among four people banned from Labour's conference in what has been labelled a "Trumpian" crackdown.

Alongside the Guardian columnist, former Labour adviser Matthew Torbitt, journalist Rivkah Brown and Tory mayor Paul Bristow all had their passes revoked.

On social media, Mr Jones said: “Labour has cancelled my conference pass. Absolutely pathetic, Trumpian behaviour.”

In a follow-up post, he added: “They are here suggesting that attempts to question Cabinet members and MPs about Britain facilitating Israel’s genocide is a ‘safeguarding issue’. This is clearly insane.”

Labour then appeared to email Mr Jones saying it had “received complaints about his conduct” and added: “We cannot continue with your attendance whilst meeting our safeguarding obligations to attendees.”

Meanwhile, Mr Torbitt revealed that his pass was also rescinded for alleged “safeguarding concerns".

On social media, he said: “I have agonised over making this public as I didn’t want to embarrass the party, but after two emails with no response I feel I have to share my concerns at what seems to be a freedom of speech issue. I have done no media this year or interviewed anyone.”

Then, speaking to GB News, Mr Torbitt added: “I don’t know why I’ve been blocked - but it isn’t a good look when three media people on the left have had their passes rescinded.

"It speaks to a hyper-factionalism many of us have felt for some time.”

When probed by The People's Channel, a Labour spokesman said the homelessness campaigner "broke the code of conduct".

Three of those involved in the cancellations are said to have lost access to the party gathering on the same day the Prime Minister addressed Labour members.

Novara Media's commissioning editor and reporter Rivkah Brown was also removed.

She said she was asked to leave after being told that a complaint had been made in writing about an incident.

Ms Brown said: “I’ve been told to leave Labour conference. When I asked why, I was informed a complaint had been made about me in writing about an incident.

"I was told I could appeal the decision, but they couldn’t tell me who’d made the complaint, or why. So, appeal what?”

She later added: “This is rapidly turning into a Trumpian crackdown on free speech.”

Also denied access was Paul Bristow, the Conservative Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Mr Bristow said: “I don’t really care that the Labour Party revoked my pass for their conference - what do they think I am going to say and do? But this is an insult to the people of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, I am here to do a job for them.”

The pass revocations has raised concerns over internal party democracy and free speech.

Former Tory minister Michael Gove said: "I passionately disagree with Owen Jones - but you don't win arguments by cancelling voices."

but a Labour spokesman insisted he could not say why Mr Torbitt specifically was banned.

He added that Labour was entitled to turn anyone it wanted away from a private venue, and said many dissenting voices were admitted to the conference.

Mr Torbitt's ban was not a freedom of speech issue, he said.
