Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has hit back at heckling Labour MPs, stating she "won't take any lectures" from them as she spoke in the Commons.
The Leader of the Opposition praised Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood for her "fresh ideas" and said she "wants her to succeed" in her mission of tackling illegal immigration.
It came after the Home Secretary announced that she will is rewrite major parts of Britain’s asylum framework, including the way the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is interpreted by UK judges.
Asylum seekers often cite the ECHR's Article 8 in their claims, which protects the right to privacy and family life.
Mrs Badenoch responded by saying that although the reforms were "a start" they do not go far enough.
The Conservative Leader said: "It’s not enough, but it is a start. I want to praise the Home Secretary. She is bringing a new energy to the job.

"She seems to get what many on the benches behind refuse to say. She's right to say that 'if we fail to deal with this crisis, we will draw more people to a path that starts with anger and ends in hatred'."
As Ms Badenoch spoke, she was loudly heckled by Labour MPs.
She responded: "Anyone who cannot see by now that simply tinkering with the current system isn't going to fix this problem is either living in la-la land, or being wilfully obstructive.
"It is a shame that it has taken Labour a year in office to realise there is a border crisis. I am afraid to tell her the what she is announcing is not going to work on its own, and some of these measures will in fact take us backwards.
"I say that to her with no ill will, and I hope she believes me when I say I genuinely want her to succeed."
"[We] are not going to take any lectures from the people who voted down every single measure to control immigration."
Mrs Badenoch agreed that the definition of degrading treatment has been “over-interpreted,” but added that renegotiating Article 3, another ECHR law often used by asylum seekers in their claims, would take years the Government does not have.
“And the fact is, it isn’t even possible,” she said. “We know this because a small group of EU countries tried this earlier, and they were dismissed by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Her Government did nothing to support them.”

Mrs Badenoch expressed scepticism about the Prime Minister’s negotiating skills, saying they “are not going to sort out that problem".
She added that the issue has been examined from every possible angle, and “any plan that doesn’t include leaving the ECHR as a necessary step is wasting time".
Mrs Badenoch compared the proposal to previous Government initiatives, including the “one-in, one-out” immigration policy and plans to tackle gangs, calling them “time-wasting” and “doomed to fail because of law-fare.”
“The tough measures will be challenged in the courts and blocked,” she said. “The new legal rules she’s talking about will be exploited, and the numbers arriving on our shores and disappearing into the black economy will keep rising.”
