Polling guru Matt Goodwin has warned the Tories they face an “extinction level event” at the next election after a new poll painted a bleak picture for Rishi Sunak’s party.

The GB News People’s poll showed the Conservatives are polling on 20 per cent while Labour are on 47 per cent.

It also puts Reform at 14 per cent, just six points behind Sunak’s beleaguered party.

Speaking on GB News, Goodwin said the writing is on the wall for the party who have been in power for 14 years.

“There is a lot going on at the moment”, he said.

“In the national polling, we have a really dire story for the Conservatives.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“This is a party facing an extinction level event. Why are they so weak? One big reason is Reform taking about one in four of the people who voted for Boris Johnson.

“Rishi Sunak is not squeezing that Reform vote nearly as much as he needs to squeeze it if he is going to have any chance.”

Goodwin added that the Tories are “getting very worried”, and Jacob Rees-Mogg’s plea for a “reunification” of the right is an example of that.

The former Tory minister used his GB News show to urge Rishi Sunak to make an election pact with Richard Tice’s party that would see honorary president Nigel Farage given a ministerial role.

“On these kinds of numbers we’ve got, we’re looking at a wipeout”, he said.

“Every Red Wall seat goes back to Labour, Labour becomes the dominant party in Scotland, Labour becomes even stronger in the big cities and the university towns.

“Assuming Reform gets something like this at the election, they’re going to cost the Tories something like 40-45 seats. The Tories will be hoping for a deal.

“Everyone from Reform says the same thing. There will not be a deal. Why do they say that? Because of the memories of 2019.

“They made that deal with Boris Johnson and got record immigration and open borders.”

The poll of 1,476, was conducted yesterday (THU) by People Polling for GB News, and despite positive signs for Labour, there are some causes for concern for Sir Keir Starmer.

Just 29 per cent of the public believe that they are ready for government; 33 per cent think they are not ready for government and 38 per cent are unsure.

Goodwin told Nana Akua and Ben Leo that there is no “mass enthusiasm” for Starmer and Labour.

“Do people trust Labour to deliver on the key pledges they gave yesterday? Just 27 per cent do”, he said.

“We have a ‘none of the above’ sentiment in the country.”
