The Deputy Prime Minister is embroiled in a hypocrisy row

Watch the moment political commentator Kelvin MacKenzie hits out at Angela Rayner on GB News after she came out with an excuse for buying a third property.

Speaking to People’s Channel stars Cameron Walker and Olivia Utley, Mr MacKenzie did not hold back over what he branded “absolute tosh”.

“I’m totally in favour of her buying what she likes, I don’t care”, he said.

“But remember, it’s her party that cares. It’s her party that doesn’t want you, it seems to me, to own a second home.

“She earns £259,000 a year, she will for the next four years then it will be down to £40,000 when she gets turfed out of Government.

“The reason she says she wants it is because she wants a home near London. I know she’s a northern girl, but I don’t know whether she knows that Hove is 50 miles from London.

“With late night voting in Parliament, how does it work? Especially thanks to her trade union friends operating the railways.

“The answer for her is that she has a Government home, a grace-and-favour flat in London as well. The idea this is being used as some kind of work pad, 50 miles from her work, is absolute tosh.

“Why doesn’t she tell the truth that she likes Hove? Why doesn’t she just come clean? She’s also revealed that she’s going to have to pay double council tax for having a second home. I am massively hostile to that idea, I think it’s perfectly fair for people to have a second home, but life isn’t fair.”

Sources close to the Deputy Prime Minister insist the Deputy Prime Minister needs the three-bedroom flat in Hove as a base while working in London.

Ms Rayner has also insisted she was paying the correct amount of council tax on the flat in the East Sussex resort.

It is understood Ms Rayner will not be renting out the Hove property, meaning it will likely be left empty for a great proportion of the year.

The Tories accused her of hypocrisy as Labour continues to crack down on second homes.

Shadow Housing Secretary James Cleverly said Ms Rayner has failed to answer “glaring questions” about her housing situation.

A Labour MP told GB News Ms Rayner’s living arrangements are not something people should get sidetracked with.

Catherine Atkinson told GB News: “What is important is that we are building 1.5 million homes that this country needs and that this Government is taking clear steps to do.

“I’m not really sure that Angela Rayner’s housing situation is particularly relevant to that.”
