The Prime Minister cautioned that Britain would become an 'island of strangers' if tougher immigration measures were not put in place

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been branded a "charlatan" after announcing the Labour Government's crackdown on migration - despite voting against tougher measures several times in the past.

Announcing his immigration white paper, Starmer declared that migration "will fall" under these new, tougher measures.

The Prime Minister told the nation: "In a diverse nation like ours, and I celebrate that, these rules become even more important.

"Without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together."

In a pointed attack on the Prime Minister, GB News presenter Alex Armstrong claimed the Labour leader is a "charlatan" for announcing these tougher measures, having voted "against tougher measures in the past".

Alex explained: "This charlatan, he voted 15 times in opposition against tougher immigration rules.

"Only once did he vote in favour, and he abstained eight other times."

Noting the influence of Reform's recent success on the Prime Minister's latest move, Alex claimed that Starmer is "running scared" of Nigel Farage's party following a surge in polling and their local election successes.

Alex told GB News: "He is running scared of Reform, it’s quite obvious. He's trying to move into their battleground - nobody who's voting Reform, by the way, is going to buy this, this all of a sudden change.

"And what an epiphany to come to so late in the day? For 20 years, immigration has been too high in this country, and now the Prime Minister has finally said, ‘oh, it's a little bit too high, maybe we should bring that down’."

Citing the Prime Minister's failure to place a migration cap on his measures, Alex claimed it was one of the most "interesting parts" of the plan.

He stated: "He won't say how high, and he won't put a cap on it, will he? Which is the interesting part."

During the press conference, Starmer was grilled by GB News's Christopher Hope on whether viewers of the People's Channel "should think you're going to succeed" after "three failed immigration acts" since 2014.

Starmer assured Christopher: "The difference here it this is the most comprehensive plan that has been put forward. It's been forged to end the Tory wide open borders experiment that we have had, and you're right about that.

"It looks at all routes and it's comprehensive, and it does the hard yards of linking skills and business to what we need to do with the economy."

He added: "It's not a narrow look just at the numbers, it puts them in their proper context on the question, which we do want to significantly reduce migration, and I'm absolutely making clear that's what it will do."
