'The UK Government can no longer claim this is under control,' the Israeli Foreign Ministry warned

Israel has called on Sir Keir Starmer to protect England's Jewish community - just as the Prime Minister was branded a "Jew harmer" by demonstrators in London.

Following Wednesday's attack in Golders Green - which saw two Jewish men stabbed by a suspected Somali-born knifeman - the Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement urging Britain to "act decisively and urgently".

It read: "After attacks on synagogues, Jewish institutions, community ambulances and now Jews targeted in Golders Green, the UK Government can no longer claim this is under control."

"Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s statements are no substitute for confronting the roots of antisemitism festering across United Kingdom.

"British Jews should not need security patrols and emergency volunteers to live openly as Jews. Enough words."

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu also hit out at Britain's "weakness" in dealing with antisemitism, saying it "gaslights one antisemitic attack after another in London".

He added: "Words are not enough to confront this scourge.

"We demand and expect action by the British Government to protect the Jews of England and bring antisemites to justice."

GETTY

On the streets of Golders Green on Wednesday night, demonstrators gathered waving both British and Israeli flags.

Protestors were heard chanting “Keir Starmer, Jew-harmer” and “shame on Sadiq Khan”, as well as calls for Labour to proscribe “IRGC terrorists" in Britain.

The incident left 34-year-old Shilome Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Shine wounded, with both being rushed to hospital shortly after the attack.

Speaking to ITV News from hospital, Mr Rand said he "definitely" felt let down by the Labour Government.

"The Government, they are the ones that are able to take care of the problems - and they are not doing their job."

The 34-year-old also said: "It's for the past few months really that our community is suffering from these type of attacks.

"And now it's going on and trying to take people's lives and it's really terrible."

He added that felt lucky to be alive, describing it as a "miracle".

Sir Keir has yet to make an appearance at the scene of the attack, but has vowed to visit “as soon as possible”.

Following the attack, the PM said he was "deeply concerned", adding that it was "not an isolated incident".

He chaired an emergency Cobra meeting on Wednesday afternoon, which was attended by senior members of the Metropolitan Police, the Mayor of London, and Cabinet ministers.

Meanwhile, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch visited Golders Green, where she declared the string of recent attacks on the Jewish community was a "national emergency".

She said: "There are terrorists and violent people who are seeking out visibly Jewish people... It is time to ban these marches, they were initially about a war in the Middle East, but now it’s quite clear they are used as a cover for violence and intimidation against Jews."

The suspect - confirmed to be a 45-year-old Somali-born British national - was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was taken into custody, where he remains.

Specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing are leading the investigation and working with Scotland Yard to establish the full circumstances.
