Sir Ed Davey told GB News that it was a 'difficult' decision

Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey has been branded a "nobody" in a scathing attack by broadcaster Carole Malone.

Speaking to GB News, Ms Malone hit out at Mr Davey's decision to boycott Donald Trump's upcoming state banquet.

Defending his decision on GB News, the Lib Dems leader claimed: "This decision, which was very difficult, was to highlight the fact that Donald Trump coming to our country is the one man who can bring an end to all this.

"And our media, yourselves and the Government and frankly, the British public need to make that clear to Donald Trump. He has to act to end this humanitarian crisis."

Delivering her verdict on Mr Davey's Trump snub, Ms Malone told GB News: "It is totally disrespectful to King Charles for him not to go to this banquet, although I suspect Charles won't know whether he's there or not.

"But I think the idea that he says he's going to send a message to Trump about the humanitarian crisis, Trump has has no idea who he is and cares even less. So his non-attendance would be nothing."

In a direct criticism of Mr Davey on the political stage, Ms Malone declared the Lib Dems leader is a "nobody".

She stated: "He's a minnow even in our political pond, so in the worldwide global political pond he is a nobody.

"So the idea he's not going and that this is going to upset the world in some way is farcical. He puts too much importance to his own position in politics."

Defending Mr Davey, commentator Jonathan Lis argued that it is his "right as party leader" to "make a statement" in light of Donald Trump's visit.

Mr Lis explained: "Ed Davey has a sizeable proportion of Parliament, he is the leader of the third biggest faction in Parliament, and if you are a party who doesn't get a lot of publicity, who has strongly held views, then you have the position and the ability to make a certain statement when Trump comes to London on a state visit.

"And when Trump is doing so many disgraceful things, I think that if you're the Liberal Democrat leader, you have the right to make a protest against that."

In complete disagreement with Mr Lis, Ms Malone said the Lib Dem leader is merely boycotting the banquet for "publicity".

Ms Malone told GB News: "He's a leader who does things to get publicity, and that's what he's using this for. He is using it to get him and his party political publicity.

"He says that Donald Trump could stop the war between Gaza and and Israel, no he can't. How can he do that? He can't stop the war in Ukraine, so how on earth could he stop the war that's happening there?"

Weighing in on the decision, GB News host Miriam Cates suggested Mr Davey's boycott is "immature" on the political stage.

She concluded: "I respect Davey's view on Trump and his decision, but there's a difference between being a campaigner and a protester and being someone who wants to be Prime Minister, who ought to be, in my view, mature enough to meet with and engage with people who are democratically elected in other countries, even if you strongly disagree."
