Trump has declared a ceasefire after days of unrelenting missile strikes in the Middle East

Eamonn Holmes wants to see Keir Starmer do more than make a statement after Donald Trump’s claim that an Israel-Iran ceasefire is now in effect.

Speaking on GB News, the People’s Channel star said it’s important the Prime Minister now wades in to preserve Britain’s status as a major player on the world stage.

He was speaking to political commentator Mike Parry, who praised Trump’s “brave” decision making in recent days.

Parry said: “Keir Starmer is showing complete lack of support. The only statement he made after this historic strike was to make a statement.

“It was a very blunt statement.”

Starmer responded: “What’s he playing at then? When you need that courage, conviction, status, where is Britain at? Where does it stand?“

And he is nowhere to be seen!”

Parry suggested Starmer is more worried about preserving the Muslim vote in Britain than he is supporting the country’s transatlantic ally.

“We know that all the time, he is looking over his shoulder”, he said.

“I think those concerns, which shouldn’t be a major concern of a UK Prime Minister, I think they are dictating his policy.

“Remember, he is surrounded by people like Lord Hermer who have the audacity to question the legality of the American strike.

“He has David Lammy who has sanctioned members of the Israeli Government because he thinks they are a bit extreme and withdrew export licences to Israel.

“I just think our status in the world and certainly in the eyes of President Trump is very, very tiny.”

The American president described the cessation of hostilities as "complete and total" in a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Monday.

Trump characterised the conflict as "THE 12 DAY WAR" and expressed optimism that the ceasefire would hold, stating his expectation that "everything works as it should, which it will."

The announcement marks a potential end to nearly two weeks of escalating tensions between the two Middle Eastern nations.

In his announcement, Trump offered congratulations to both nations involved in the conflict.

"On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, 'THE 12 DAY WAR'," the president wrote on Truth Social.

The ceasefire has now taken effect, according to reports from Iran's Press TV one hour ago.

The Iranian state broadcaster confirmed that the "ceasefire begins following four waves of Iranian attacks on Israeli-occupied territories."

The announcement comes after a period of intense military activity between the two nations, with residential areas bearing evidence of the conflict's impact.

Images from affected sites show security personnel surveying damage to residential buildings that were struck during missile attacks from Iran on Israeli positions.
