Blunt represented Reigate in Surrey for nearly three decades

Crispin Blunt, the former Conservative MP for Reigate, has been charged with four drug offences, prosecutors announced today.

The 65-year-old faces a single count of possessing methylamphetamine, a Class A controlled substance, alongside three separate charges relating to Class B drugs. These include possession of GBL, cannabis and amphetamine.

Malcolm McHaffie, who heads the Crown Prosecution Service's Special Crime Division, confirmed the decision to bring charges against the ex-parliamentarian. The CPS stated that prosecutors had determined sufficient evidence existed to proceed with the case and that pursuing criminal proceedings served the public interest.

Mr McHaffie emphasised that the CPS had collaborated closely with Surrey Police throughout the investigation. He issued a reminder that criminal proceedings against Blunt are now active, urging "all concerned" to respect the defendant's entitlement to a fair trial.

"Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings," Mr McHaffie stated.

The charges stem from a police visit to Mr Blunt's residence in Horley, Surrey, during October 2023. Officers had initially attended the property in connection with an unrelated matter, according to the CPS.

That separate matter involved Mr Blunt's arrest on suspicion of rape, which led to him losing the Conservative whip in October 2023. He subsequently completed his parliamentary term sitting as an independent member.

Surrey Police concluded that investigation in May 2025, determining there was insufficient evidence to proceed and confirming no further action would be taken regarding the rape allegation.

However, the force indicated at that time that Blunt would continue to be investigated for suspected possession of controlled substances.

Those inquiries have now culminated in the four charges announced today by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Blunt represented Reigate in Surrey for nearly three decades, serving as the constituency's MP from 1997 until 2024.

During his time in Parliament, he held the position of justice minister between 2010 and 2012, and later chaired the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee from 2015 to 2017.

The former parliamentarian did not respond to requests for comment regarding the charges.

Blunt is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on 25 March to face the four drug possession charges brought against him by the Crown Prosecution Service.
