Reform UK's first female MP Sarah Pochin beat Labour's candidate in Runcorn and Helsby by just six votes

Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe has declared a "strong sensation" of change in UK politics as Nigel Farage's party storm through several local election victories - gaining more than 300 seats.

The party's first female MP Sarah Pochin beat Labour's candidate in Runcorn and Helsby by just six votes - while Dame Andrea Jenkyns became Reform's first-ever Mayor in Greater Lincolnshire.

Following her victory, Pochin declared that "the people of Runcorn have spoken", and "enough is enough".

Discussing Reform's election success on GB News, Ann Widdecombe told GB News that she has not felt this same level of momentum in politics "since the 1990s".

Widdecombe revealed: "I do get a very strong sensation of change in the air, and one of the reasons I say that is that when I'm out campaigning, it isn't just that I go to people's doors, people come up to me in the street, and that is a very good indicator.

"The last time I saw that on that scale was in 1992. Neil Kinnock had a huge election rally which turned the population against Labour - people were crossing the street to say to me, 'don't let them get in', as if I controlled it.

"But they were coming across the street, and I'm getting the same thing now. People are putting themselves out to say, good luck - you don't have to ask them, they'll tell you."

Hailing the success of Reform MP Sarah Pochin, Widdecombe claimed that it "doesn't matter" if the candidate is male or female, "what matters is merit" and the Reform candidate "winning".

Widdecombe told GB News: "I do not care whether somebody is male or female, gay or straight, black or white, old or young, or any other division and identity that you can come up with - all I care about is that we have a meritocratic person there who wins, and that's Sarah.

"I think it's a good look to have people of merit who will perform well. That's the good look."

Delivering her verdict on Starmer's reaction to the Government's election losses, Widdecombe claimed that Labour has "let down" voters, and is going "further and faster" towards election defeat.

She stated: "Well, like the Winter Fuel Allowance, that is going to go further and faster - it was so unexpected. They hadn't foreshadowed that in the manifesto, and they did it almost immediately.

Widdecombe told GB News that Reform UK 'needs the opportunity' to deliver for Britons

"It's affected an awful lot of people for the worse, and some of the most vulnerable people for the worse. And so I'm not surprised that it was the number one issue. What people are really saying is they've let us down - if he wants to go further and faster than that, well, he's going to go further and faster towards electoral defeat."

Pressed by host Emily Carver on whether Reform "has the answers" to the biggest issues affecting Britain, Widdecombe said that the party "needs the opportunity" to do it.

She concluded: "We'd like the opportunity, and from the way things are going, we're going to get that opportunity.

"In the last manifesto - which we didn't call a manifesto - we said very, very clearly, tax incentives for people to stay working in the National Health Service, we said about stopping the boats, we said about reversing some of the tax rises. We made very clear promises."
