The Deputy Prime Minister is facing an ethics investigation over allegations that she saved £40,000 in stamp duty

Angela Rayner's "tax dodge" row will spark "serious political infighting" within Labour, a Conservative MP has warned.

Speaking to GB News, Alex Burghart cautioned that the Deputy Prime Minister has "a lot of questions to answer" over an alleged "£40,000 stamp duty dodge".

Ms Rayner has admitted to removing herself from the deeds of her family home in Ashton-under-Lyne before buying a seaside flat for almost £800,000.

Following the backlash towards the Housing Secretary, Ms Rayner still insists that her old home remains her primary residence.

Asked for his verdict on the revelations on the Camilla Tominey Show, Mr Burghart told GB News: "She's definitely got questions to answer, but I'll tell you what's really going on here.

"This is Labour Party politicians leaking against Angela, because they can see that Keir Starmer's leadership is wobbling."

Warning of further "infighting" within the Government, the Tory MP added: "This is the start of very serious political infighting within the Labour Party.

"And I'm afraid you're going to see a lot more of that in the months to come."

Weighing in on Labour's decision to overturn the closure of the Epping migrant hotel, Mr Burghart criticised Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and accused her of "completely dismembering the deterrent programme" that the Tories left in place.

He told GB News: "This is the decision that the Home Secretary has chosen to make, and I think a lot of people are very, very angry about that. This is a Government that came in and said that they were going to close down migrant hotels across the country, instead use of them is going up.

"And that's because they've completely dismembered the deterrent programme that we left in place. We left power with Rwanda, and without that, the people smugglers and the opportunists see that Britain's a soft touch and people are crossing the Channel in absolutely unprecedented numbers."

Asked by host Andrew Pierce with the Conservative Government didn't go against the ruling of the ECHR in allowing the Rwanda flight to take off, Mr Burghart declared that Britain must "change the rules" instead of "obey them".

Mr Burghart explained: "We're the Brits, we obey the rules. We like queues and we always try and do the right thing. But as I've always said, if the rules don't make sense, you need to change the rules.

"I'm all in favour of people following the rules, we've got to have the right rules."

A spokesman for Angela Rayner said: "The Deputy Prime Minister paid the relevant duty owing on the purchase of the Hove property in line with relevant requirements and entirely properly.

"Any suggestion otherwise is entirely without basis."
