OPINION: Nigel Farage shares his views on the national inquiry into grooming gangs

I have been talking about grooming gangs since 2014, since meeting people in Rotherham who were telling me the truth about what was going on.

I even dared back then to suggest that there was an ethnic link with the crimes that were happening, and you could imagine how demonised I've been over much of the last few years. And not just me, many others, some brave journalists, the odd politician here or there.

But what was really interesting about Baroness Casey's report is when she made it clear that a substantial proportion of the suspects in these grooming gangs, rape gangs choose your own terminology, that a substantial proportion are non-UK nationals and asylum seekers, which could mean young men crossing the English Channel, of which there had been another 450 just today alone.

But finally, something has happened, because to begin with Keir Starmer, or two-tier Keir as many of us call him, would not contemplate a full inquiry with full statutory powers.

Starmer said this just a few months ago: "And when politicians, and I mean politicians, who sat in government for many years, are casual about honesty, decency, truth and the rule of law, calling for inquiries because they want to jump on a bandwagon of the far right."

Today, Christopher Hope asked him: "When you said to me in January, you said that it's a far right bandwagon if you're calling for a national inquiry.

"I know you're talking about politicians, but a lot of GB News viewers and listeners were also concerned, and they felt you were calling them far right. Would you perhaps regret that remark?"

He said: "I said, expressly, politicians, and I mean politicians, and I was expressly calling out politicians who had been in office and done nothing, and it was that, that I was criticising. I was not criticising your viewers."

So it's okay. We're not far right now. And he even went further. He said there should be no no-go areas.

Okay, so I'm pleased that he's U-turned. I'm always pleased when the Prime Minister U-turns.

He seems to be making quite a habit of it these days. But when he says there'll be no no-go zones, when we're told we'll get to the truth, well I wonder.

Firstly, we don't know who will head up this inquiry. Will it be another one of his human rights lawyers, judge mates? But the bit that concerns me is the scope of the inquiry.

A series of targeted local investigations in local areas, with powers to compel local organisations?

I thought this was a national inquiry. Yes, a series of targeted local investigations in local areas, with powers to compel local organisations.

And they'll consider evidence and data to decide the first local areas for investigation.

So we're almost back, folks, I think, to where we were when originally he'd said to the House, there'll be a series of local inquiries.

I worry that the scope of this inquiry won't be long enough. I worry that the Home Secretary has said it will take three years.

So I wonder whether they could just push it past the date of the next election.

And I want to ask you at home, is this inquiry a con? Are we being led up the garden path?
