GB News’ Chief US Correspondent gives his take on the Minneapolis shooting

It's a tragedy that a mother-of-three was shot dead by law enforcement in America but I did make this point last night...

As a parent, you have to pick your battles.

There's a reason I don't go out getting bladdered anymore, take helicopters, do bungee jumps or travel to active war zones: I have babies at home that I'm responsible for.

I’d like to do all those things. I’d have enjoyed continuing my life as a man free of responsibility and duty. But I can’t, because I exchanged all that for something more malleable.

When you become a parent, you sacrifice parts of your life for the benefit of your children. And that means making responsible decisions. Those kids rely on you, and only you.

The fatal shooting in Minneapolis needs tonnes of nuance. The woman, Renee Nicole Good, probably wasn't intending to hit the Ice agent, but he clearly thought she was.

Renee’s partner was telling Ice to “come at us” seconds before the shooting while agents were telling Renee to get out of the car - instructions she ignored.

In the split-second chaos, moments after her wife yelled at her to “drive!” and she hit the gas, she paid the ultimate price.

New footage from the Ice agent’s cellphone looks pretty conclusive to me. Renee tried speeding away, probably misjudged the turn trajectory of her vehicle and instead made it look like she was aiming for the officer.

It’s also been revealed the law enforcement officer was seriously injured by a vehicle just six months ago - giving him every reason to fear for his life.

I’ve spent time on the road with Ice agents in Florida. Many of them have been in the job for decades before the spotlight was thrust upon their work after President Trump took office in January.

They are routinely attacked, abused, harassed and goaded simply for doing their jobs. Some of them in Florida told me how they don’t know if they’ll return home each night after kissing their families goodbye in the mornings.

During my trip with them in Fort Myers, I saw firsthand the hate they received from members of the public as people heckled and filmed when driving past on the roadside.

We were on a mission to apprehend an international cocaine smuggler from Guatemala. Why would anyone have a problem with that?

That’s not to say there aren’t bad apples. Of course there are, and there always will be in every industry.

But people should take up their grievances with America’s immigration policies with the government and its leaders - not individuals who are risking their lives to, in their minds, protect the integrity of their nation.

This isn't about who was right or wrong in Minneapolis. What it's about is playing the best hand as a parent.

I used to play a lot of poker - not so much now. But the game taught me a lot about risk/reward. Is it worth playing a hand if the pot odds aren’t good enough? What’s the return going to be if I go all guns blazing and shove all-in? Am I getting bang for my buck? The risk/reward concept of poker can be applied to all parts of life. Sometimes the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze.

I pray for the woman's soul and her poor kids who now grow up without a mother because she decided to spend her time blocking roads and goading armed Ice agents.

The irony is she was out defending illegal migrants who probably couldn't care less about her when she could have been grafting for her kids or spending time with them instead.
