It is no surprise at all that Jews were murdered today, writes Gary Mond, Chairman of the National Jewish Assembly

I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of the murdered victims of today’s heinous attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester.

The massive rise in antisemitic activity that has taken place in recent years has culminated in today’s slaughter of innocent Jews going to shul on Yom Kippur.

It is vital that we appreciate the underlying cause, and that is the failure of both this Labour government and its Conservative predecessor to take the threat of Jew hatred seriously.

Hate marches under the farcical slogan of “Free Palestine” have been allowed to take place almost every week throughout the country, with the police mostly standing and watching, taking no action.

Members of the public react as they gather near the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, where multiple were injured after stabbing and car attack on Yom Kippur, on October 2, 2025 in the Crumpsall suburb of Manchester, England

Furthermore, Jews are regularly victims of antisemitic hate in hospitals where staff wear “Free Palestine” badges, in schools where children are taunted by others for being Jewish and teachers do not intervene, in places of work where antisemitic incidents are frequent, in entertainment where Jew hatred is rife and in sport where Jews face discrimination.

It is hence no surprise at all that Jews were murdered today. If our government is serious about fighting antisemitism, it will ban the marches and the so-called Palestinian flag as well, de-recognise a Palestinian state and make antisemitic behaviour a specific criminal offence.

Sadly, I fear it will do none of these things. It is too busy working on a definition of Islamophobia in order to restrict free speech.
