OPINION: Yvette Cooper unveiled the new migration plan in Parliament today

Terrified by the surge of the Reform Party, the Reverend Starmer has attempted to steal Nigel Farage’s clothes — a one-nation experiment in open borders conducted on a country that voted for control.

Well, no more. Today, this Labour Government says it is shutting down the lab. Keir Starmer has promised a new kind of immigration system: one that is controlled, selective, and fair.

A clean break with the past, linking access to visas directly with investment in home-grown skills. He sometimes seems like an AI hologram — but never mind.

In the process, he’s even taken a swipe at the very man whose clothes he’s tried to steal: "Nigel Farage is falling over Putin. That’s not patriotism. That is not what working people need.”

Well, there we go. But let’s be clear — this is not legislation. It’s merely a white paper.

That means the final policy still needs to be agreed, written in legal form, passed to Parliamentary Council, turned into a bill, debated and passed by the House of Commons, followed (of course) by the Lords, and then bounced back and forth in parliamentary “ping pong” before finally receiving Royal Assent and becoming an Act of Parliament.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Even then, there will be a delay before implementation. In other words, despite the fanfare, almost as grand as the Royal Standard recently gifted to the Household Cavalry, these changes may not take effect for at least 18 months.

And even when they do, what will they actually mean?

That clever little ban on social care visas isn’t all that it seems. Migrants will still be able to fill social care jobs if they enter the UK on another type of work visa.

The enhanced English language requirement for dependants sounds like common sense — but why not go further and stop or reduce dependants from coming altogether?

The proposed changes to human rights laws, intended to make it easier to deport foreign criminals, are also futile. In truth, they’re desperately bogus.

Because anyone refused by our courts will, lo and behold, still be able to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

The only way to truly deport illegal migrants and foreign criminals is to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights, leave the Refugee Convention, and replace the Human Rights Act.

Finally — and perhaps most importantly — immigration will remain in the hundreds of thousands, far more than the country wants or can sustain.

This announcement tells us one thing: the Labour Government is terrified of the Reform Party, and desperate to appear as though it is taking mass migration seriously.

But make no mistake this new plan is business as usual.
