I was chatting with a very old lady at the AGM of our estate last night. She was petrified. Really petrified. It emerged she lived alone in a largish house which had been in her family for decades. Her husband had passed away.
She needed every penny that came her way. She even rented out her driveway to railway commuters through JustPark as she lived down the road from the local station and could undercut the unjustifiable £11 daily fee imposed by the Lib Dems at Elmbridge Council.
Her fear was that the Chancellor was going to target her with two new taxes. The first was to add two new bands of council tax to houses like hers - she would be in the second of the bands. That might add £2,500 a year to her bills with no benefit whatsoever to her.
The second was to impose some kind of annual mansion tax. I don’t know how much her place is worth, let’s guess at £1.5million and the property tax is an annual charge of 0.5 per cent. That’s a whopping £7,500-a-year. Where is she going to get that from?
Her third issue didn’t affect her so much, but did affect her son who had a clutch of buy-to-lets. The Treasury is letting it be known that they are pondering adding national insurance to rental income. You can be sure Reeves will insist that that the NI cannot be passed on to tenants.
No wonder the old lady was petrified. Having happily lived in her home for many, many years a government was effectively forcing the old out.
And if she was forced to sell - with all the stress involved - what kind of price would she get in a market destroyed by Starmer. And who on the Labour benches, or the millions on benefits, would drop a tear for that lady. I would, and I suspect you would, but we don’t count.
We are simply mobile cash machines for a government who hates you but loves your money.
There’s a lot of talk about mental health issues of the young what about this old dear who doesn’t know where to turn with all these taxes coming down the road?
And why should she have to call in the removers at her age? So that the SKIDS (Skint Idle Dim Socialists) can live in luxury?
Personally, I am sick to the back teeth of my money subsidising other people’s lives. Even though I rail at the moon over the injustice (I don’t want to make a bigger ‘’contribution’’) it’s clear Reeves is determined to make the middle classes suffer because Labour refuses to match spending with the nation’s revenues.
Reeves waited until she was 3,000 miles away in Washington DC before disclosing she was going after the wealthy. How about going after our exploding cost base? By 2030 benefits will be hitting £100billion a year.
The UK is in the most dreadful trouble. The IMF (Institute of Miserable F**kers) says we will have the highest inflation next year of any developed nation and the lowest growth. That’s socialism for you.
So, instead of taking a cleaver to costs (and that would include freezing pensions) Reeves has announced her old friend tax and spend. And it’s you she’s taxing so that her Labour voters can spend.
The politics for Labour are clear. In the last YouGov poll the Greens - as mad as you like - were on 13 per cent, only 7 per cent behind Labour who were on 20 per cent. With the economy at best stuttering and might well be on the point of collapse, Labour might fear that the Greens could actually pass Labour.
So, Reeves has decided to go further left which means somebody has to pay. It can’t be Labour voters as by and large they are skint and stupid.
So they have to go after those who are clever to gather some assets. Like the old lady I met the other night.
She has done her bit in her life. Why, as she comes closer, to the end of her days, does she have about finding money to keep the baying Socialists from her door?
I feel desperately sorry for her.
