Idiots like Gary Neville would rather criticise Britons for their patriotism than the Islamists who want us destroyed, writes TV columnist Carole Malone

You’ve got to feel sorry for Gary Neville. The poor sap is labouring under the illusion he has a brain – a political brain - when he’s embarrassingly devoid of any political nous.

In fact, he’s a bit like his superhero, Keir Starmer, who has as much political aptitude as your average gnat. Both are so out of touch with the people of this country that they’re a joke.

I’m talking about the video Neville posted at the weekend where he spoke about “angry white men” dividing the country and flying the Union Jack in a “negative way”.

The 50-year-old ex-Manchester United player even said he’d “instantly” remove a Union Jack flag that workers had put up at one of his building sites in Manchester because the flag was being used as a tool of division.

Come again? How the Hell can flying your country’s flag be a tool of division? How can people flying the British flag be in any way negative? And just who are these people who might be upset at the sight of our flag?

I’m thinking the only people it might upset are people who hate our country, our culture and want both destroyed. But why the Hell are we worried about pandering to or upsetting those people?

If they don’t like this country or what it stands for, they should shove off and live in a country whose flag they do respect.

Neville made these ridiculous comments in response to the maniac British Syrian, Jihad al-Shamie, killing two people and injuring others at the Heaton Park Synagogue last week.

I mean, how bloody dare he? What the hell have white men got to do with that? This was a crazed Islamist nutter who shouldn’t even have been out on the streets because he was on bail for an alleged rape, a monster so evil he went on a killing spree of Jews, screaming: “This is what they get for killing our children.”

This barbarous act had sod all to do with white British men and everything to do with the kind of Islamist ideology that has been allowed to fester and explode unchecked on our streets.

And the reason it’s been allowed to go unchecked is because of misguided, dangerous idiots like Neville won’t accept what’s actually happening in this country, who can’t see the evil that’s in front of their eyes. They would rather criticise Britons for their patriotism than the Islamists who want us destroyed.

People like Neville are part of the problem. Rather than scream condemnation at the scumbag terrorist, Al Shamie, he chose instead to attack white British men for flying their flag.

How twisted is that?

“I’ve been building in this city for 15-20 years,” says Neville. “And no one’s put a Union Jack flag up in all that time. So why do you need to put one up now?”

The fact that he has to ask the question shows how thick and uninformed he actually is. British people are flying and reclaiming their flag because many feel that, in the face of mass uncontrolled immigration, Britain’s cultural identity is being erased.

They’re reclaiming it because they’re sick of being told that to fly our flag is racist. They’re sick of our history, our culture, our traditions being trashed not just by the liberal elites who were born here but by people who come to live in this country yet hate us and everything we stand for.

They’re sick of being told that if they join a rally against the rape of British white girls by Pakistani men, it's racist.

They’re sick of being told that if they demonstrate against illegal immigrants being put up in expensive hotels, they’re far-right racists. And they’re sick of being told our flag is offensive to people from different countries, different cultures.

We keep being told migrants feel scared walking down a street and seeing our flag flying. Well tough! I think it’s pretty scary that streets in London have actually had signs attached to lampposts saying, “Trust in Allah”. Does anyone give a stuff if that upsets me, a Christian, or anyone else? No, they damn well don’t!

So why is the idiot Neville even asking the question about why his workers are displaying the British flag? If he’s as politically astute as he says he is, he ought to know.

They’re flying it because of all the above, but mainly because they’re British and proud of it. And because it’s the only way they can show their support for a country they believe is going in the wrong direction.

Yet still, this self-proclaimed Man of the People thinks our flag is toxic and divisive. Neville insists he’s a proud supporter of England. No, he damn well isn’t if he thinks the Union Jack is toxic.

Does he know and understand anything about the people who work for him on those building sites– what they think, what they feel, how terrified they are of what’s happening to this country? If he did, he wouldn’t be the least bit surprised that they want to fly our flag.

But then maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. The man moulded himself into a two-bob political commentator. Trouble is, he’s not very good at it. He might once have been a half-decent footballer, but where politics is concerned, he’s so out of his depth it's shocking.

I say that because his superhero Keir Starmer – who Neville joined for a party-political broadcast before the general election - put our flag at the heart of Labour’s Party conference last week, proclaiming: “Let's fly all our flags because they are OUR flags,” he rallied. “We will bring the whole country together as patriots of our great nations.”

Did Neville not hear that from the confines of the ill-informed echo chamber in which he lives?

As for his claims that he’s a man of the people, it's archaic. It’s hard to be a Man of the People when you’re a multi-millionaire ex-premier league footballer who now builds five-star hotels and luxury apartments.

And let’s be clear here - this self-proclaimed socialist isn’t building social housing for the working people he insists he cares so much about. He’s building them for the rich to make himself even richer.

Let’s not forget this is the bloke who ranted against Brexit - something a majority of working people voted for.

He’s also the bloke who in 2023 said: “Let’s get the minimum wage up to a good national living wage.” Yet it emerged that his five-star Stock Exchange Hotel was advertising for waiters and waitresses at a slave rate of £9.50 an hour. This is a hotel where a bottle of wine can cost up to £5,900, but Neville wanted to pay his workers a piddling £9.50 an hour.

This is also the bloke who claims to be a socialist yet doesn’t see the contradiction of sending his kids to private schools.

He’s the hypocrite who, having been an outspoken critic of the Qatari government, its human rights abuses and its stance on gay rights, put all that to one side to become a handsomely paid member of the Qatari state media by becoming a pundit at the 2022 World Cup.

So, forgive me if I laugh at anything this hypocrite, multi-millionaire champagne socialist says about politics or our flag because every time he opens his mouth, he not only makes a complete fool of himself he also shows how out of touch he is with the working people he claims to care so much about!
