'Seriously, what is the point of even bothering to vote these days?'

Let’s talk Brexit.

When I used my power as an individual to leave the EU, I understood what I was voting for.

I was not fooled by a bus claiming how much we would save and neither was I swayed by leaflets trying to convince me to vote to stay in.

I thought democracy was democracy and that when the majority instructed Parliament, that they would honour the result. How wrong I was.

What I did not expect was a political class who after being given their instructions by the the public, who they work for, to, in no uncertain terms, take back control and advantage of all the opportunities Brexit could deliver, deliberately attempt to scupper what they’d been told to do.

We had Theresa May, a Remainer, constructing a half-baked deal which the EU rejected at every turn. She had to go.

Then Boris Johnson, whose oven ready deal finally got Brexit done.

Although the deal itself, which worked off what Theresa May had started wasn’t particularly good, it ended the political paralysis that the country had been enduring since the vote to leave.

The Tories didn’t bother to take advantage of even the most basic of opportunities. Why? Because many of them voted to remain. There was no will.

And now the ideologically driven Labour Party are utilising their majority to edge us back in.

Apparently Cabinet ministers, including potential leadership contender Wes Streeting, David Lammy and Peter Kyle have suggested Sir Keir Starmer should consider rejoining the customs union, which they said would boost economic growth.

What is wrong with these people? Did they not hear or are they simply not listening?

Next week Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Paymaster General, will meet EU officials to finalise a deal that will force the UK to align with European food and drink standards.

Whilst there might be some benefit, it will also force British companies to return to following EU rules without a say in how they are made.

A move like this is also likely to put food prices up as we may have to pay VAT on it, something we don’t do now and didn’t have to do before we left.

And we may have to cancel our post Brexit Trade deals. Seriously, what is the point of even bothering to vote?
