The former Prime Minister is urging authorities to question the King's younger brother

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown is demanding that the police conduct a fresh interview with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor regarding his expenditure of taxpayer money while serving as Britain's trade envoy.

In an interview with the New Statesman, the ex-Labour Party leader disclosed that he had previously ordered an investigation into the former Duke of York's spending habits during his time in Downing Street.

Mr Brown said: "Andrew was interviewed, at my request when I was Prime Minister, by a minister from the business department about the unacceptable costs he was incurring."

He added regarding Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s response: "I was told that his response was to ask whether the government seriously believed that he should have to travel on commercial flights."

The former Prime Minister is now urging authorities to question Mr Mountbatten-Windsor again, not only concerning potential Official Secrets Act violations but also his utilisation of public resources during his diplomatic role.

Mr Brown is also pressing for Mr Mountbatten-Windsor to face questioning over allegations that women were trafficked into Britain by convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

He said: "The British authorities should now re-interview Andrew, not just over possible breaches of the Official Secrets Act, but over his use of public funds, and especially over incidents in which women allegedly brought to him at Sandringham, Buckingham Palace, Windsor and at other locations, may have been trafficked into the country by Epstein."

The former Prime Minister's calls follow Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

He was released under investigation and has denied the claims.

Mr Mountbatten-Windsor has also repeatedly denied wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.

Mr Brown previously confirmed he submitted a five-page memorandum to police forces in February 2026, expressing his concern about securing justice for trafficked women and girls.

The former Prime Minister also claimed that when he was chancellor, the then-Prince Andrew asked the government to fund a dedicated fleet of aircraft for the Royal Family.

Mr Brown said he rejected this proposal outright and said he raised the matter directly with the late Queen.

He additionally said that Liam Byrne, who chairs the Business and Trade Select Committee, has committed to raising questions about Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's conduct during his time as trade envoy.

The former Prime Minister is calling for a parliamentary examination alongside the ongoing police investigation to determine how public money was spent and whether efforts were made to shield Mr Mountbatten-Windsor from American investigators.

Mr Brown said: "The King has said that no one should be above the law, and alongside the police investigation, a select committee in Parliament should examine how public funds were used, and whether a cover-up took place that prevented Andrew from being interviewed by US investigators."

Andrew's representatives have been contacted for comment.
