It was November 2019. I was stopped in the corridors of the European Parliament by a fellow MEP. A list had been drawn up by Tory HQ, he informed me, called Men and Measures.
A list of bribes designed to force high profile Brexit Party candidates from standing in the forthcoming snap election.
On that list were allegedly peerages and positions. Do NOT go anywhere near that, I warned him. It could be criminal.
Days later a campaign of industrial scale interference in The Brexit Party's selection process became clear.
Having prepared to field a full quotient of candidates, they were dropping like flies.
Phone calls from CCHQ to anybody planning to stand on a Brexit Party ticket with reports of offers of council seats, contracts, all sorts of post election trinkets in exchange for not running.
The sort of operation that would make President Erdogan of Turkey blush.
If that sounds exaggerated, later that month the Daily Mail printed a list of Brexit Party candidates in Tory marginal seats with their personal contact details urging readers to harass them into stepping down.
An extreme tactic that wouldn't look out of place emanating from the Kremlin.
So as details emerge about CCHQ blackmail, what do I believe? Frankly, I imagine what has squidged out to the press is the tip of the iceberg.
Are the Tories capable of big time bullying, bribing and back briefing? Ha.
Perhaps it's time to dredge the swamp. Today, we really need to talk about blackmail.
