Lance Corporal George Hooley was described as a 'born soldier'

The British soldier killed in Ukraine in a "tragic accident" has been named as Lance Corporal George Hooley, a member of the Parachute Regiment.

A photo of the late serviceman, who was 28, was shared by the Ministry of Defence as tributes poured from British allies around the world.

Lance Corporal Hooley died on Tuesday morning while watching Ukrainian forces conduct tests on a new defensive capability.

He had served in Afghanistan, Africa and Eastern Europe during his military career and was set to receive promotion to corporal rank next month.

Accompanying a tribute from his superiors, the MoD also shared a picture of Lance Corporal Hooley with his dog Mabel.

His company commander said: "If you met George Hooley, you remembered it... His energy and enthusiasm were simply extraordinary."

The tribute described a man who possessed "a deep kindness and genuine time for everyone".

"He listened properly listened and he cared. His door was always open, and his heart even more so," the commander added.

At work, Lance Corporal Hooley was characterised as "a born soldier" who established the benchmark others followed.

His commander described him as "the glue" and "the laughter" of his unit, "the calm voice of sense" and "the soldier who made the hard days easy and the good days memorable".

The serviceman enlisted in the Army in 2015 and completed his infantry training at Catterick in North Yorkshire.

In their statement, the MoD confirmed he achieved distinction when passing the Parachute Regiment's junior non-commissioned officers' course in 2020.

At Prime Minister's Questions, Sir Keir Starmer also delivered a tribute to Lance Corporal Hooley.

Sir Keir told MPs the soldier was "Full of courage and determination".

“He served our country with honour and distinction around the world in the cause of freedom and democracy, including as part of the small number of British personnel in Ukraine,” the PM said.

Defence Secretary John Healey, who was in Washington on Wednesday for discussions on the AUKUS nuclear submarine programme, said Lance Corporal Hooley "served our country with distinction".

His American and Australian counterparts offered their condolences during the visit.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, and to him and his family, and it is a reflection of the sacrifice and commitment that so many make around the world."

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles added: "We are all very much thinking of you at this moment."
