Tenerife tourist plunges to death from balcony after fire erupts inside hotel

Guests were seen pictured standing outside the hotel in the dark while fire crews rushed into the property.

The nationality of the tourist who fell from the room where the blaze started is yet to be revealed.

Local emergency crews confirmed on Thursday morning the hotel death as well as the fire.

Authorities said in a statement that the first emergency calls "were received just after 9pm last night".

"(The calls were) saying a fire had broken out at a hotel in Venezuela Avenue in Puerto de la Cruz," the authorities added.

"Firefighters, ambulances and police were sent to the scene and police began the evacuation of the hotel once they arrived."

Authorities said they were informed "a man who turned out to be a 23-year-old client had plunged from a hotel balcony for reasons that are still being investigated".

"He was confirmed dead at the scene as a result of the injuries he suffered," the authorities said.

"The blaze was brought under control and put out. It affected a room which was ventilated afterwards."

The Melia Costa hotel has not made any official comment.

Meanwhile, the UK Foreign Office travel advice for Spain has indicated that Britons should be wary of changing temperatures in the country.

"Take extra care when planning a hike or walk," the Government said.

"Check local weather reports for warnings of extreme heat or cold temperatures.

"Altitude sickness may be a risk in some of the higher mountain ranges in Spain."

The regions include Granada, Huesca and Tenerife.

Britons choose Tenerife as a regular destination for varying reasons, including reliable, all-year-round warm weather.

It is often seen as an affordable area to travel due to budget-friendly flights and resorts.

The island is famous for its beaches and party scene, however, there are other areas to experience.

That includes its volcanic landscapes and nature.
