The accident occurred in the Polish city of Kraków

Two trams collided in the Polish city of Kraków on Wednesday, wounding up to 34 people and leaving a driver seriously injured, authorities have said.

Kraków's Municipal Transport Company said the accident occurred on Bieńczycka Street towards the Kocmyrzowskie Roundabout.

"We're gathering information. There may be a dozen or so injured people, but it's too early to go into details," said Kraków's assistant police chief, Anna Zbroja-Zagórska.

According to broadcaster TVN24, tram number 52 was standing in front of the the roundabout when it was hit by tram number 5.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and were spotted treating victims following the collision just before 6pm local time (5pm GMT).

Marek Gancarczyk, a spokesman for MPK, said 35 people suffered injuries in the crash.

Two people — including one of the drivers — are believed to be in a life-threatening condition.
