The 88-year-old, who was convicted in 2009, is ravaged with dementia

Convicted paedophile Josef Fritzl believes he is a pop star due to his dementia and cognitive confusion, a forensic psychiatrist has claimed.

Heidi Kastner claimed the 88-year-old insists he appeared on a show as a music icon and talks about visits from relatives that never happened.

Kastner, who also revealed Fritzl is sometimes "fully there", suggested moving Fritzl to a nursing home.

However, a court will need to decide where to move him because of his worsening health.

A regional Austrian court ruled Fritzl was "no longer a danger" and could be moved to a standard jail.

The decision was later blocked by the Higher Regional Court in Vienna.

The Austrian was convicted after keeping his daughter Elisabeth in their family home’s cellar and forcing her to have seven of his children.

Elisabeth was imprisoned in the Amstetten house for 24 years, raising three of the children with his wife Rosemarie.

Fritzl was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder by negligence, enslavement, incest, rape, coercion and false imprisonment.

He was arrested in 2008 after being forced to take one of the children he had fathered with his daughter to hospital.

He is eligible for parole after becoming frail and being injured by a number of falls.

A psychiatrist even claimed the 88-year-old is now harmless.

Fritzl was forced to change his name to Mayrhoff after he had his teeth kicked out by inmates as Garsten Abbey prison.

Eyebrows were raised about his health last year after Fritzl issued bizarre statements from jail in which he said he wanted to be freed and live to 130.

He told The Sun: “I recently read that it has been scientifically proven that human beings can actually live to 150 if they eat well and exercise.

"So I want to live to 130 - that's my plan."
