The South American country's federal police have formally accused Bolsonaro of fraud

Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has allegedly falsified his own Covid vaccination records, according to a police report.

Federal police have formally accused Bolsonaro of fraud following an investigation.

The country's comptroller general's office found that showed he was vaccinated against Covid in Sao Paulo in July 2021 - however he was not in the city during that time.

Sources say the ex-president was indicted on charges of entering false data into the country's public health system (SUS) and forming a criminal organisation.

His former aide, Mauro Cid was arrested in May and has also been formally accused in the police report, sources claim.

The police’s indictment alleges that Bolsonaro had inserted false information into the public health database to make it appear that he, his 12-year-old daughter and several others in his circle had received the Covid-19 vaccine.

While president, Bolsonaro consistently dismissed the importance of vaccines and social distancing measures during the pandemic - despite Covid killing more than 700,000 people in Brazil.

His administration ignored several emails from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer offering to sell Brazil millions of jabs in 2020.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

He said that he had not taken the Covid vaccine or done anything wrong.

"It's a selective investigation. I'm calm," Bolsonaro said.

"The world knows that I didn't take the vaccine."

The police report lays foundations for Brazil's prosecutor general to present criminal charges to the Supreme Court.

It has already been ruled that Bolsonaro is "politically ineligible" until 2030.

The decision comes after it was revealed the 68-year-old was spreading electoral misinformation during the 2022 election.

Other investigations include one looking into allegations that Bolsonaro tried to sneak two sets of expensive diamond jewellery into Brazil and prevent them from being incorporated into the presidency’s public collection.
