British holidaymakers have been told to brace for severe disruption to air and rail travel

The Foreign Office has issued a travel warning for Britons travelling to Italy ahead of a widespread strike being carried out by transport workers.

The nationwide strike was called by the Italy's largest union, the General Confederation of Labour (CGIL), alongside other smaller unions in protest of Israel's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla.

CGIL have warned that the strike will impact air and rail travel, affecting both state-run and privately owned operators.

The industrial action began late on Thursday evening and will last for 24 hours.

The warning published by the Foreign Office reads: "There is a 24-hour National Transport strike on Friday 3 October which will cause disruption to travel.

"This will affect trains from 9pm on Thursday 2 October and all transport from midnight. Check schedule details with transport providers."

The advice also warned Britons: "Demonstrations are planned in Rome for Saturday 4 October.

"This is likely to attract a large number of protestors and cause disruption to roads and transport in the city centre.

"Plan your day and avoid any demonstrations."

Publicly-owned train company Trenitalia has warned that their services will be plagued with "cancellations or charges" throughout the strike.

Trenord, which runs rail services in and around Milan, has pledged to offer holidaymakers replacement buses to and from the Italian capital's Malpensa Airport.

Essential regional trains from 6am to 9am and from 6pm and 9pm will not be impacted, as they are protected from industrial action on weekdays.

Flights in and out of Italy are also at risk from cancellation during the 24-hour strike.

Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has hit out at the transport workers' decision to strike over the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Ms Meloni fumed: "The flotilla has brought no benefits for the Palestinian people.

"On the other hand, it seems to me that it will bring many inconveniences to the Italian people.

"I wouldn't have expected the unions to have called a general strike on a Friday, at least on an issue they consider as important as Gaza."

The Italian premier added: "A long weekend and the revolution do not go together."

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini echoed the condemnation, saying: "We will not allow the CGIL and left-wing extremists to bring chaos to Italy.

"We will not tolerate any sudden general strike.

"Occupying an airport runway, causing problems and disruptions to workers and travellers, has nothing to do with the situation in Gaza.

"These are not pacifists, but hoodlums".
