The two nations have agreed to stop striking one another after a night of attacks

Iran and Israel have announced to end strikes against each other after US President Donald Trump intervened earlier today.

The Islamic Republic warned of any further "aggression and hostile acts" - including against Lebanon - would lead to "much more severe and crushing measures than before".

Iran’s top military command Khatam al-Anbiya central headquarters said: "Accordingly, the operations of the armed forces are hereby declared halted; however, it is emphasised that if the aggressions and acts of mischief continue — including in southern Lebanon — much more severe and crushing actions than before will follow."

Israeli media are reporting a senior official has said they will halt strikes on Iran at President Trump's request.

However, they said if Hezbollah attacks on Israel continue, they will retaliate by striking the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Mr Trump demanded the two countries to "immediately stop 'shooting'" after both nations launched attacks last night and into today.

He took to social media to say Iran and Israel were looking "to do an immediate ceasefire".

Writing on Truth Social, he said: "Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE!

"Final negotiations on 'Peace' are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way.

"The Blockade will remain in place, and in full force and effect, until a 'Final Deal' is reached. Things should move quickly."

Iran and Israel began a string of missile strikes against one another for the first time since the ceasefire in April.

Last night, Iran launched a wave of missile attacks against Israel, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) calling it the start of "a full week of continuous strikes".

The Islamic Republic said it had "delivered a painful response" against Israel for its continued attacks on Lebanon, including yesterday, where strikes were launched on the outskirts of Beirut.

Israel retaliated, launching attacks on Iran, hitting Mahshahr petrochemical plant in the south west of the country, claiming the facility was being used to produce ballistic missiles.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it also completed significant strikes on "strategic defence systems" in Iran, while the IRGC said it had targeted Israeli air bases.

The two nations continued to strike each other, driving up the global price of oil by roughly four per cent.

Israeli officials have confirmed Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mr Trump spoke on the phone today.

The call took place before Mr Trump posted on social media this afternoon.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei also pointed the finger at the US for the sudden escalation over last night and into today.

He said America also has some responsibility for Israel's aggression and the increased tension will "also be on the US".

The communication between Iran and the US had not stopped, the spokesman said, but did not specify whether messages were exchanged yesterday or not.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said they have not "abandoned the field nor the negotiating table".

In a post on X, he said: "Our priority is national security and the peace of our people. We will defend the rights of the nation with authority and will not retreat in the face of any threat.

"Diplomacy and defense are the two wings of national power; we have neither abandoned the field nor the negotiating table.

"God willing, with unity and rationality, Iran will emerge triumphant from this trial as well."
