British skier dies on holiday in France after smashing into tree

A British skier has tragically died after violently smashing into a tree at the French ski resort of Avoriaz in Morzine.

The local mountain team was alerted to the accident at 3pm yesterday (2pm GMT).


Reports indicated the skier had left the piste and collided with a tree at high speed.

The unidentified victim, who was found unresponsive, was said to have been swerving to avoid a crowd of fellow skiers.

The 68-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after rescuers were unable to resuscitate him.

Avoriaz is one of 13 ski resorts located within the Portes du Soleil region.

The area, which stretches across France and Switzerland, is popular amongst alpine enthusiasts.

Another British skier also died after descending the “Swiss Wall” route in the Portes du Soleil area near Avoriaz.

The 47-year-old skier, who lost control and tumbled down the side of the mountain, was pronounced dead at the scene on February 7.

A 30-year-old Briton died following a heavy fall at the Serre Chevalier resort the week before.

He was pronounced dead after being taken to Grenoble University Hospital.

Ski resort boss Patrick Arnaud said: “The victim was discovered by a patroller who immediately raised the alarm.”

He added: “Joined by several other trackers, they provided first aid. All the ski area teams are affected by this tragedy and all our thoughts are with the family.”

The death resulted in an investigation being launched to determine the circumstances of the accident.

A separate incident on January 29 saw a 63-year-old British man collapse and die at La Plagne’s ski resort.

Officials claimed the main suffered a heart attack and could not be resuscitated.

A police spokespersons said: “Emergency workers were at the scene extremely quickly, but the man could not be revived.

“He was declared dead by the Modane mountain aid station.”
