He discussed plans to meet with King Charles tomorrow, who he said had been a friend "for a long time".

The King will host Mr Trump at Windsor Castle, where he will be treated to a ceremonial welcome and a lavish state banquet.

There are no public-facing engagements for the president, with thousands expected to take part in major protests against his two-day stay.

But he has hinted at possible tariff relief for UK steel ahead of talks with Sir Keir Starmer at the Prime Minister’s country residence, Chequers, on Thursday.

Trade, Ukraine and Gaza are set to dominate talks between the two leaders.

The trans-Atlantic allies are understood to have come to an agreement focused on accelerating the development of nuclear power, with Mr Trump and the Prime Minister expected to sign the deal this week.

Republican Congressman Pat Harrigan, a Member of the For Country Caucus who was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service in Afghanistan with the US Army Special Operations, told GB News: "President Trump’s second State Visit to the United Kingdom is historic.

"No other American president has ever received this honour and it reflects the strength of the UK–US special relationship.

"The full honours extended by King Charles underscore the deep respect between our nations when America leads with confidence.

"Britain and America both need leaders who strengthen our partnership, not weaken it."

Speaking to reporters ahead of landing this evening, Mr Trump said: "My relationship is very good with the UK, and Charles, as you know, who’s now King, is my friend.

"It’s the first time this has ever happened where somebody was honoured twice. So, it’s a great honour."

He added: "I’m there also on trade. They want to see if they can refine the trade deal a little bit.

"We’ve made a deal, and it’s a great deal, and I’m into helping them."
