The tragedy occurred in the Caribbean port city of Cartagena on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called at around 7am local time after the tourist got into difficulty while swimming.

The incident happened in El Laguito, a neighbourhood popular with international visitors.

Local reports suggest the man had travelled to Colombia for his wedding.

One account claims he had recently exchanged vows with his partner, who is believed to have been present at the time.

Sea conditions were said to have been rough at the time of the tragedy.

Despite efforts by emergency crews to rescue him, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In 2024, US travellers to Colombia were urged to avoid dating apps after the "suspicious deaths" of eight American tourists in two months.

The US embassy in Bogota said some victims were drugged and robbed after meeting people through the apps.
