Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned the shooting as an 'act of pure evil'

The Chairman of the National Jewish Assembly has told GB News "words fail him" following the mass shooting at a Hanukkah festival on Bondi Beach.

Speaking to GB News Breakfast, Gary Mond expressed deep sadness for the "horrendous" attack on the Jewish community.

At least 15 people have been confirmed dead following the masacre on the Australian coast on Sunday.

Police identified Naveed Akram, 24, and his father Sajid Akram, 50, as the two men who opened fire during the celebration in Sydney.

Naveed remains in a critical condition in hospital while Sajid was shot dead by police at the scene.

Offering his initial reaction to the shooting, Mr Mond told the People's Channel: "It's absolutely horrendous. My initial reaction is to offer my condolences to the families of those who were murdered, and also to wish how we say in Jewish terms, is 'R'fuah Sh'leimah', which is get well soon to those that have been injured.

"Words absolutely fail me, but actually this sort of event tragically is no surprise."

Hitting out at Western Governments for "doing nothing" to deal with "Islamic fundamentalist hate", he added: "It's no surprise with left-wing Western Governments who've done virtually nothing to deal with the Islamic fundamentalist hate that's been spewing for several years now.

"All in a number of Western countries, not just Australia, but also in the United Kingdom."

Asked by host Eamonn Holmes if he believes an event like the Bondi Beach attack could take place "in the UK", Mr Mond admitted: "Tragically, absolutely, yes.

"I fear that there's no will on the part of either this Government or frankly the previous Conservative Government to do anything about it. We see this demonstrated quite easily by the fact that the marches, the hate marches that have been taking place so regularly, which are frankly anti-Jewish marches.

"They're not pro Palestine, they're anti-Jewish marches which have been allowed to happen and are an incentive for further antisemitic behaviour on the part of the Islamists and their far left-wing colleagues."

Warning of the "escalation" of hatred towards Jewish communities around the world, he explained: "It begins with verbal abuse, then it turns to graffiti, then it turns to arson, then it turns to physical abuse, then it turns to murder, then it turns to mass murder and pogroms.

"It's a steady journey down this horrendous path, and that's what's happening here as well."

Mr Mond added: "We saw of course the murders in Manchester on Yom Kippur a couple of months ago, so yes, we can certainly relate to it here, and we just don't see the British Government doing anything about it.

"There's anti-Semitism in schools, in hospital, in the courts, in businesses, in sport, in entertainment, in universities, in a host of other arenas of national life and we see no real action from Government, and that is what is terrorising the Jewish population of this country. They feel absolutely abandoned and feel that they're sitting ducks waiting for the next incident."

Asked by host Ellie Costello what he hopes the Government will do to help protect Jewish people in Britain, Mr Mond concluded: "The very first thing is to ban the marches. It's been talked about for years and nothing has happened. They're still allowed to take place.

"Next thing is a whole raft of measures in law to stop antisemitism happening in all those arenas that I spoke about. For example, it should not be allowed that any nurses or doctors should wear free Palestine badges when they're at work.

"It should not be the case that children have to put up with antisemitic behaviour from their colleagues, for example, even little things like young children wearing free Palestine T-shirts in class.

"This sort of political behaviour must not be tolerated because it is essentially a code for hate Jews, kill Jews."
