A wall along a motorway fell and smashed down onto tracks after heavy rain

A train driver has been killed and as many as 35 people have been injured after a commuter train derailed and crashed near Barcelona.

According to local officials, the Rodalies train collided with a retaining wall which fell onto the track on Tuesday evening.

Emergency services are currently assessing the severity of injuries suffered by passengers.

The incident occurred as heavy storms battered north-east Spain.

Eleven ambulances are on the scene in Gelida, Catalonia, treating those who suffered injuries, emergency services confirmed.

The local fire service dispatched 35 crews to the scene and have rescued one trapped passenger from inside the train.

Some of the injured have been evacuated to nearby Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca hospitals.

Many coastal parts of east and north-west Spain are on high alert because of severe weather conditions.

Snowstorms in the Spanish Pyrenees and storms along the coast of Menorca have caused high waves.

The crash comes just two days after two high-speed trains collided in Adamuz, Andalusia.

At least 42 people are known to have died in what was one of the worst Spanish rail accidents in over a decade.

Carriages on a Madrid-bound train detailed and crossed over to the opposite tracks before colliding with an oncoming high-speed train.

GETTY

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said Sunday’s collision was a “hard blow” and he will “work so it doesn’t affect the credibility and strength of the network” while speaking to RNE.

Officials confirmed a "retaining wall has fallen onto the track causing a passenger train accident".

"We received 28 calls and several ambulances were sent along with firefighters and police," emergency services said.

They were later forced to erect a field hospital nearby where the injured were taken for initial assessment.

The crash was shockingly the second to hit Catalonia's railway lines on Tuesday.

A second train carrying 10 passengers derailed near Girona after rocks fell onto the track - with storm conditions blamed again.
