Fears have been sparked over the vulnerability of the Royal Navy's fleet which could be at risk of being sunk by Vladimir Putin's hypersonic missiles.

Russia has equipped its fleet with Zircon missiles, which are understood to be capable of travelling 100 miles in less than 60 seconds.

It is believed Moscow possesses around 40 of the missiles in its arsenal.

Lord West, the ex-Chief of the Naval Staff, has warned that hypersonic missiles represent "a very real threat and a genuine concern to those who want to maintain our defences", The Sun reports.

Defence sources have cautioned that the missiles travel with such speed that even a warhead packed with solid metal or concrete would possess enough destructive force to sink a vessel.

Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty, and Labour's Graeme Downie, have both previously pressed ministers on how the threat of Russian missiles affects Britain's defensive capabilities.

Defence minister Luke Pollard said the Government was "aware" of Zircon missiles and "continues to monitor the impact of the Russian use of these and other missile types".

Mr Downie recently quizzed defence minister Al Carns on "what threat was posed to the UK by Russian hypersonic-capable missile systems operated by the Russian Northern Fleet".

The Labour minister responded: "The Ministry of Defence keeps Russian military capabilities and investment under continuous review.

"We work closely with our Nato Allies to understand the implications of Russian military capability development for Alliance security.

"Nato is strengthening its deterrence and defence as a result of the increasing threat from Russia and will continue to adapt as necessary.

"Hypersonic missiles are just one type of many Russian air and missile capabilities.

"In light of the increasing threat the UK faces, His Majesty's Government announced up to £1billion of investment for Integrated Air and Missile Defence in the Strategic Defence Review.

"This is part of a comprehensive and integrated approach to deterring and defending against the range of strategic threats we face."

In her debut speech last month, the new head of MI6 warned Britain is already on front line against Russia and the country should brace itself for Vladimir Putin's "export of chaos".

Blaise Metreweli said the "front line is everywhere" as Russia uses hybrid warfare tactics, including cyberattacks and sabotage.

She cautioned that Britain is heading into a volatile new era, driven by Russia and other hostile powers reshaping how conflicts are fought.

The MI6 chief said: “Putin should be in no doubt, our support is enduring. The pressure we apply on Ukraine’s behalf will be sustained.

"The export of chaos is a feature not a bug in the Russian approach to international engagement - and we should be ready for this to continue until Putin is forced to change his calculus."
