Four dead and 20 others injured in mass shooting after gunman opens fire at bar

Multiple victims and witnesses ran to nearby businesses to seek shelter from the gun shots, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Four people were taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The police statement read: "Upon arriving at the scene deputies made contact with a large crowd of people, several of which were suffering from gunshot wounds.

"It was learned that hundreds of people were at the location when the shooting occurred.

"Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots.

"Several victims were transported by Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services to the hospital.

"More victims continued to show up at area hospitals seeking medical attention from injuries sustained at the scene."

The county sheriff's office has not confirmed if any arrests have been made in connection to the shooting.

It said the circumstances around the incident are "still under investigation" but confirmed officers are investigating "persons of interest".

"This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone," police said.

"We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones."

The names of the victims will not be released yet.

A statement on its website says Willie's is "more than just a restaurant", serving as a "go-to gathering place, a hub of warmth and friendship in the heart of our beloved community".

St Helena Island is located in Beaufort County, in the state of South Carolina.

It has a population of 24,766, according to Census Reporter citing 2023 figures from the US Census Bureau.
