The incident took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the town of Grand Blanc at around 10.25am local time today.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Renye said the suspect had allegedly driven his vehicle through the doors of the church before exiting and "firing several rounds at individuals".

"10 gunshot victims have been transported to local hospitals at this time including one who has been deceased," he said.

The church was earlier said by police to be "actively on fire".

Mr Renye said the blaze had been extinguished by fire crews within the last hour, adding that officers believe "additional victims" will be found at the scene.

He confirmed there was an active service ongoing at the church at the time of the incident, with "hundreds of people" inside.
