The proposed event would mark a first royal visit to the US in almost two decades

US President Donald Trump is believed to be drawing up plans to invite King Charles onto American soil after a "fantastic" second state visit, a senior White House official said.

Mr Trump departed Britain on Air Force One on Thursday after meeting Sir Keir Starmer at Chequers and spending time with the King at Windsor Castle.

The senior official told The Telegraph: “It was a really fantastic trip. The British know how to do this perfectly.

“They set the bar high for their trip to see us.”

The White House official revealed to the newspaper that Mr Trump wants to give the King a leading role at celebrations marking America's 250th anniversary of independence from British rule.

The event is scheduled for next year, with the royal visit believed to be in the early planning stages.

As Mr Trump was onboard Air Force One before departing Britain, he expressed his gratitude to the royals for hosting the unprecedented second state visit.

The US President said: “We’re grateful beyond words for the spectacular honour of the state visit yesterday at Windsor Castle, hosted by His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty, Queen Camilla.

“These are two fantastic people. We will never forget it.”

On Wednesday, the Royal Family took a prominent role during the state visit as the American leader toured the grounds of Windsor Castle in the Irish State Coach.

The US President later witnessed a guard of honour and was treated to a Red Arrows display overhead.

That evening, St George’s Hall hosted a lavish state banquet, attended by 160 guests.

Delivering a speech at the state banquet, Mr Trump hailed the visit as being “truly one of the highest honours of my life”.

On Air Force One, the US President made no secret of his enjoyment at the banquet, telling reporters: “Everybody was great. Even the men looked beautiful.

“It’s hard not to look beautiful in that room. That was one of the coolest rooms.

"That room was built for a table, but the table happened to carry 200 people.”

The last time a British monarch made a state visit to the US came in May 2007, when Queen Elizabeth visited to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement.

The late Queen was hosted by President George W Bush in the White House.

During the event, she said: "A state visit provides us with a brief opportunity to step back from our current preoccupations to reflect on the very essence of our relationship.

"It gives us the chance to look back at how the stories of our two countries have been inextricably woven together."
