The man is said to have pulled out a large knife from his backpack before launching his alleged attack

Chicago police have launched an urgent hunt for a man suspected of stabbing a 27-year-old woman in the chest in an unprovoked attack on a train platform.

The alleged victim was sitting on a bench when the man approached her.

He is then said to have plunged a knife into her chest at the station - near the University of Illinois, Chicago.

A police spokesman said the woman miraculously only suffered minor injuries and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

But now, searches are underway for the "stabber" - a six-foot tall black man, weighing between 73kg and 81kg.

The man was seen heading northbound towards Chicago's South Morgan Street after the alleged attack, according to police.

He was seen wearing white jeans and trainers, a brown jacket, an orange hoodie, a pink hat, a grey backpack and brandishing a blade at roughly 11.15pm on November 8.

By Wednesday morning, police still did not know the whereabouts of the suspect.

GETTY

The incident comes just months after 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was stabbed to death on a commuter train in North Carolina.

Decarlos Brown Jr was charged with violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death in connection to the incident - and could face the death penalty if found guilty.

CCTV footage showed Ms Zarutska on her phone moments before the suspect, in a red sweatshirt, pulled out a pocket-knife and stabbed her.

After the attack, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said: "If mayors can't keep their trains and buses safe, they don't deserve taxpayers' money."

Attorney General Pam Bondi described the attack as a "direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people".

Ex-convict Brown Jr was described as homeless and suffering from "mental illness" at the time of the attack.

According to the Illinois Policy Institute, 1,356 separate crimes were reported by passengers at Chicago Transit Authority stations between October 2023 and September 2024.

This figure equates to one crime on the transport network once every three hours.

Last month, Donald Trump ordered 300 National Guard troops to descend on Chicago after federal agents were forced to open fire on a woman who allegedly rammed into officers with her car.

In August, the President said: “Chicago’s a mess. You have an incompetent mayor. Grossly incompetent.

“And we’ll straighten that one out, probably next."

Democrat Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker slammed the decision, labelling it “a manufactured performance - not a serious effort to protect public safety”.
