The Governor of Texas had led calls for the unnamed student to be given the boot

A student who mocked Charlie Kirk's murder has been expelled after footage of the incident went viral and sparked mass backlash.

The unnamed individual was filmed imitating the conservative activist's assassination in front of a group of his supporters on the campus of Texas State University.

In the video, the individual can be seen in a crowd slapping his neck and pretending to recoil, as if hit by a bullet, while screaming: "Charlie Kirk got hit in the neck, b***h."

He can then be seen climbing onto a statue and slapping his neck again before pretending to slump to the ground.

The footage sparked outrage as people said he was mocking the moment Mr Kirk was shot during a rally at Utah Valley University.

The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, said: "Hey Texas State. This conduct is not accepted at our schools.

"Expel this student immediately. Mocking assassinations have consequences."

Kelly Damphouse, the President of Texas State University (TXST), released a statement saying: "The university has identified the student in the disturbing video from Monday's event.

"I will not tolerate behaviour that mocks, trivialises, or promotes violence on our campuses."

She confirmed the student was no longer at TXST - but said that due to federal law, she was unable to comment further.

However, she did add: "Unfortunately, some people are suggesting that the individual's actions represent the beliefs of TXST students in general or those of specific student organisations.

"These kinds of insinuations are unfair to our student body, and they cause some of our students to feel unsafe.

"Just as the behaviour in the video was reprehensible, attempts to spread blame onto innocent students are also unacceptable.

"The actions of one person do not reflect our entire community or the individuals in it."

Tributes from around the globe have poured in for Mr Kirk, but other responses to his death have sparked complaints.

Jimmy Kimmel's late-night TV show was cancelled on Wednesday after the long-time late-night host claimed that Mr Kirk's alleged murderer was part of a so-called "Maga gang".

Nexstar Media Group, which runs around 200 TV stations across the US, said Mr Kimmel's comments were "offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse".

In the UK, ITV's Good Morning Britain received more than 350 Ofcom complaints after a guest compared Mr Kirk to former Klu Klux Klan leader David Duke.

Nels Abbey said: "I don't believe he was a Cicero for the TikTok age, I believe he was a David Duke for the TikTok age."

He also said Mr Kirk was "quite clearly and comfortably a supremacist".

The episode aired fewer than 24 hours after the 31-year-old's death.
