A 1.3 magnitude earthquake has been recorded

A 1.3 magnitude earthquake has been recorded in County Durham, as Storm Ciaran batters the country.

The quake was recorded at 1am today by the British Geological Survey.


It hit a small village called Quaking Houses in County Durham.

The tremors are unlikely to be felt by residents, as it was recorded at a 1.3 magnitude - earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.0 can be felt by a wider area.

The UK has about 200 to 300 earthquakes every year but the mast majority go unnoticed.

Only 20 to 30 on average a year can be felt.

The storm has already claimed the life of one man in France.

Storm warnings have been upgraded to amber for much of the south of Britain.

It has triggered a number of school to close across the country as it makes landfall.

Schools in Southampton and across Hampshire have shut amid "risk to life" as well as in Devon, Suffolk, Dorset and in parts of Kent.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Resilience Forum made the decision to close schools with winds of up to 80mph forecast over both the UK and France.

Commuters have been advised not to travel into the office.

Flights have also been grounded, with train services disrupted and major incidents declared in parts of the UK as the storm rages on.

In Jersey, winds of up to 104mph were recorded.

Tornadoes typically reach wind speeds of 75mph to 100mph.

A rare red "threat to life" alert was issued by Jersey and Guernsey Met Offices.
