One passenger described how confusion at their new destination left their fellow travellers 'very angry'

An enraged passenger caused left a Tui flight to Manchester to be diverted, leaving travellers stranded more than 4,000 miles from home for several days.

The flight which took of from Montego Bay, Jamaica, on Sunday at 5.20pm was expected to last eight hours, travelling a distance of 4,616 miles.

However, just as the Boeing 787 crossed into Cuban airspace, the cabin crew alerted pilots there was a disruptive passenger on board.

The captain decided the person needed to be removed from the plane and diverted to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas.

Before it was able to land, the plane had to circle Nassau in order to dump fuel and become light enough to land safely.

Two hours after take-off, it landed in Nassau, just 450 miles from its departure and still 4253 miles from its destination.

The plan was initially for the disruptive passenger to be disembarked, the plane refuelled and then the journey continued with a delay of only a few hours.

However, it emerged that part of the plane had broken while it was dumping fuel.

One passenger, Emma Louise Hamer, said on social media: "By the time we got the suitcases, messed about with immigration because the airport was shut and they had to bring people in, and got to the hotel, it was 3am.

"Some people didn't check into their rooms until half-past six, seven o'clock [in the morning]."

She described the accommodation as "hotels that, really, I wouldn't even put my dogs in".

Tui does not have any employees in Nassau and was reliant on local ground handling agents.

According to Ms Hamer, passengers were instructed to leave their hotels on Monday at 11am.

However, they then sat in the airport until 8.30pm when they were told their flight had been cancelled.

She said: "This is getting really scary now. You're going to have a full-scale riot. Security are coming in to arrest people because people are kicking off.

"All they want is for Tui to come here and tell us what's going on."

Ms Hamer added: "You've got a lot of very, very, very angry customers here."

Tui said that all passengers would be emailed to advise them to claim compensation of £520 each under air passengers' rights rules.

They will also receive vouchers worth at least £100 for a future Tui holiday.

The new part needed to fix the plane left London Heathrow on a British Airways flight on Tuesday.

The return flight from Nassau back to Manchester is expected to arrive on Wednesday at 12.30pm, over two days late.
