British tourists planning holidays to Chile are being advised to take extra precautions when using transport in the country.

As the summer travel season approaches, officials have highlighted specific risks that travellers should be aware of when visiting the South American destination.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office issued a warning urging Britons to look out for scams when arriving.

The warning reads: "Updated information about travelling with children, taxi scams at Santiago Airport and general advice about crime, including violent muggings and vehicle crime."

These safety measures are particularly important in busy tourist areas where unofficial taxi drivers may specifically target foreign visitors.

According to Government advice, there is a "high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets."

They urge Britons travelling to "stay aware of your surroundings at all times."

Terrorist attacks in Chile cannot be ruled out, according to travel warnings.

Araucanía, Biobío and Los Ríos regions of the country are highlighted as hotspots for attacks from individuals or groups claiming to represent the interests of indigenous communities.

State actors and businesses operating in these regions are the primary targets of these groups.

The department advises tourists to exercise caution and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Anarchist groups have also carried out attacks, mostly in the Santiago Metropolitan region.

Attacks are said to be principally aimed at causing property damage.

Tourists are advised to keep their bags close at all times, as local authorities might treat unattended bags with suspicion.

There is also a risk of violent protests in Santiago and other Chilean cities, particularly on Friday afternoons and evenings, according to the warnings.

The largest protests usually take place in central Santiago, with advice saying to "avoid all demonstrations".
