Watch as Nottingham locals deliver their verdict on St George’s Day amid calls to make the day of England’s patron saint a public holiday.
People living in England do not get a day off from work or school like their Irish counterparts do on St Patrick’s Day.
But the verdict was unanimous amongst the members of the public GB News’s Jack Carson spoke to, that England should get the same treatment.
One couple said: “We definitely should be able to enjoy it. We’re proud to be in Nottingham, where the large England flag is on display.”

Asked if England should do more, they said: “We should be proud of who we are, so definitely. It should definitely be a public holiday.”
Another local took aim at people who people who do not embrace their heritage, saying: “We should be proud of it.

“There are far too many people hell-bent on destroying it. There is an English heritage and it should be preserved - it should be celebrated.”
Asked if he would celebrate St George’s Day more if he had the day off, he said: “That would be more the reason to celebrate it. It’s a good idea, I think.”
Another Nottingham resident was in favour and he praised the huge flag adorned on the Council House in the city’s Old Market Square.
“It’s good - I saw them putting it up last week. It’s meant to be the biggest one they’ve ever put up, which is a nice touch”, he said.
While he does not celebrate St George’s Day himself, when asked whether he would if it was a day off, he joked: “Anything for a bank holiday!”
He added: “It would be nice. Everyone is stuck in their ways doing what they do so it would be nice to celebrate something different.”
One said that while he has never celebrated St George’s Day, a day off for the patron saint would be a “good idea”.
He said: “It would be a good idea to celebrate our history and our nation. If it were a day off, I would celebrate it.”
Nottingham is one city that cannot be accused of failing to celebrate its country’s national heritage given its huge St George’s Day flag, said to be the biggest ever.
