Frome Community College in Somerset received a hoax call

A community college was evacuated after receiving a bomb threat from an unknown caller.

The incident occurred at Frome Community College in Somerset, when the school received a malicious call claiming a bomb was hidden somewhere on the premises.

Students in the affected area were immediately evacuated from the building for their safety at 8.30am on May 8.

During the evacuation, pupils were told the disruption was due to a gas leak rather than a bomb threat.

Avon and Somerset Police were immediately alerted and officers attended the scene. Police worked alongside college staff to conduct a thorough search of the campus

A spokesman from the force said: "At approximately 08.30hrs [yesterday] Frome Community College received a call from an unknown person stating that there was a bomb somewhere on their site.

"Police were immediately called and attended, and with staff they searched the area. Nothing suspicious was found and the call was deemed malicious.

"During this time all students in the specified area of the college were evacuated, the normal school day resumed shortly afterwards."

Police have not confirmed whether an investigation is ongoing to trace the individual behind the hoax.

A post published on the school's Facebook page read: "This morning we received a hoax call which necessitated a visit from the police onto College site to ensure everyone's safety.

"We extended tutor time whilst the police checked our site, and we have now returned to our normal timetable. The matter is now being handled by the appropriate authorities."

The incident follows a separate disruption at the college earlier this term, when the site was closed due to IT and technical issues.
