58-year-old Vicky White died from her injuries in jail after she opted to shoot herself when she was caught by police

A female prison guard who went on the run with a murder suspect from an Alabama jail has died after shooting herself, police say.

58-year-old Vicky White died from her injuries in jail after she opted to shoot herself when she was caught by police.

She was accompanied by 38-year-old Casey White as the pair were arrested in Indiana following a police chase.

They had both vanished from a prison in Lauderdale County on 29 April.

They are believed to have been romantically involved with each other.

Officials state the pair had last been seen when she was transporting him to a fake mental health evaluation.

It was Ms White's last day at work before her retirement, she had told colleagues that she planned to spend more time at the beach after selling her home.

The Vanderburgh County Coroners Office confirmed that Ms White had died from her injuries.

An autopsy is expected to shed more light on her death, and it will be released on Tuesday.

Casey White is believed to have surrendered after the couple's vehicle crashed in Evansville, Indiana.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said: "We got a dangerous man off the street today. He is never going to see the light of day again."

The US Marshals Service said the pair had been driving a copper-coloured Ford Edge with an Alabama registration plate on Friday.

Sheriff Singleton issued a warning over Casey White on Monday, urging law enforcement to not "take any chances" with him.

Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly told reporters that he would have trusted Ms White with his "life".

He added: "If we needed something from the jail, she was our go-to person, solid employee. That's why it's so shocking".

Casey White was sentenced in September 2020 with murder over the stabbing of 58-year-old Connie Ridgway.

He had already been serving 75 years for a series of violent crimes in 2015, including burglary, theft and a police chase.

He was awaiting trial at the Lauderdale County Jail before opting to try and escape, according to authorities.

They say he pleaded guilty to murder, before changing his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.

He faces execution if convicted.
